Man Charged With Human Trafficking, Craigslist Scam, After Working Undercover

A man has been charged with human trafficking, fraudulent advertising and human smuggling in a Toronto investigation, according to Toronto Police.

The 52-year-old man was arrested Wednesday, May 2, after working undercover with a prostitution-selling website, police said. Police first started investigating in December 2017.

“In connection with this ongoing investigation, officers uncovered evidence that the suspect conspired with individuals in Mexico and Albania to launder money as part of an extortion scheme,” according to a statement.

“The investigation revealed further evidence of exploitation of local women through fraudulently created advertisement on an online marketplace.”

According to the officers, the man is an Albanian national who is known to frequent Toronto, and who had lived in Canada since 2001.

Police said Thursday morning that the investigation into the alleged trafficking is continuing.
